Junior Rider Training
The ACT Motor Cycle Club runs a low cost ($30) Junior Rider
Training Program for new riders aged 4 to 15. It is a prerequisite
for new junior riders who want to race or ride on the Club's tracks,
and who don't already have a (yellow) Junior Rider Training log
book or Motorcycling Australia licence. The Club's Kick Start program
includes both theory and practical exercises under the guidance
of qualified Club coaches and experienced young racers. Click
here for more information, including course content, cost, dates
and contact details.
For more information on how to get started in motocross/dirt
track, go to the MX and DT FAQ pages. Another good resource is the
Motorcycling Australia-produced booklet, Kick Start - Getting
Started in Motorcycle Sport. Download it here
(pdf file).
Upcoming Training Schools
The ACT MCC Dirt Bike School's Kick
Start Junior Rider Training School and any visiting
commercial coaching schools are advertised on the club
calendar.
06-05-2008 - No FASTMX Coaching this week
- MX Track closed to prepare for MX Rnd 3.
Matt Haskins has reminded us that there will be no FASTMX Coaching
this week. The MX track is closed during the week prior to an event.
This is to enable the track maintenance team to prepare it for this
Sunday’s MX Round 3. He will resume Coaching next week.
Once we have completed the new Junior Rider Training Centre we
should be able to keep the Coaching rolling if either of the tracks
are closed.
9 April 2008 - Final instructions for re-scheduled Kick
Start Junior Rider Training course 14 & 15 April 2008.
The Club’s next Kick Start Junior Rider Training Course for
(new) Juniors has been brought forward to the first 2 days of the
school holidays, Mon 14 & Tues 15 April 2008. The reason for
the change is that the original dates, 19 & 20 April, clash
with the MX fencing working bee/rec ride and the opening round of
the Club’s Dirt Track Club Championship.
The Club’s Coaches and assistants will be camping out overnight
at the track, and invite the new families to do the same.
We will update the Club’s calendar with the new dates.
If you have enquired about attending the course, please click here
wish to download the final instructions.
For more info, including course content, please look for the 'click
here' link under the Junior Rider Training story on this page.

6 Feb 2008 - FASTMX Weekday Coaching at the MX Track
The Club’s MX Sub-Committee is pleased to announce that it
has accepted Matt Haskin’s proposal to provide professional
MX and Enduro coaching services to ACT MCC members at the MX track
and elsewhere at the ACT MCC Fairbairn Park complex on weekdays
and after school.
Matt started out at our Club as a junior on a Pee Wee 80, a former
ACT MCC Rider of the Year, and is now a professional rider and coach.
Matt and his brother Lach commenced their coaching 'apprenticeships'
as Lyndon Heffernan’s assistants on the Yamaha Academy of
Off Road Riding. They have both achieved Motorcycling Australia’s
Level 2 Motorcycle Coaching qualifications; the highest in our sport.
Until recently Matt was the Academy’s Head Coach for WA and
has coached riders all over Australia.
In the early days Matt and Lach both helped run our Kick Start
Junior Rider Training program. As far as we know Matt is Australia’s
only Level 2 Coach who is also currently a Pro Rider. In November
2007 Matt was one of only 15 riders selected to attend the MA Elite
Under 21yrs ‘Riders to America’ MX Camp at the Australian
Institute of Sport, Canberra.
When he returns from the USA in early February 2008 he plans to
commence regular coaching for ACT MCC members at Fairbairn Park.
He will be our Club’s first “resident” professional
coach, and will be assisted by Lach.Matt has established his own
Coaching business and intends to concentrate on coaching local riders
within our district.
The Club recognises the value that regular coaching and training
has on improving rider’s skills and performance. It is keen
to support a program that is available to all members on a regular
basis at our complex. For these reasons the MX Sub-Committee will
subsidise this program by waiving the normal $10 per rider per day
track hire fee for the first 12 months. All Coaching will be under
an MA Coaching Permit and will also allow the junior riders to accumulate
hours towards their compulsory 5 hours coaching per year. Depending
on the number of riders who take up this offer, some of our other
Club Coach’s and assistants will assist. This will help to
keep the group sessions affordable. The tracks will still be available
for hire to other Commercial coaches (including Matt and Lach) for
weekend and school holiday coaching schools for members and non
members at the current commercial rates.
Matt is seeking expressions of interest from riders of all ages
who are interested in being coached individually and as groups on
weekdays and after school. You can contact Matt direct on 0422 188569
to make a booking.
